Mr. Jonathan Kennon Thompson Smith of Jackson has published seven genealogical miscellanies for Henderson County. He wishes to share this information as widely as possible and has granted permission for these web pages to be created. We thank Mr. Smith for his generosity. Copyright, Jonathan K. T. Smith, 2001
Executors and administrators were required by law to file periodic, usually yearly, SETTLEMENT REPORTS on the estate they were serving. In this volume some of the receipts from heirs for their portions from estates are recorded as well as the settlement reports submitted to the county court clerk who in turn officially brought these reports before the assembled county court for confirmation before being recorded in the bound volume for that purpose. The reports are chiefly long lists of bills and expenses paid, assets collected and money paid to "distributees," the heirs of decedents. This information casts light on the lives of decedents indicating their business dealings, the names of their neighbors, people with whom they usually dealt in borrowing and loaning money. In this publication only data of genealogic interest has been abstracted. Researchers will usually want complete copies of these records. This volume is kept in the office of the Henderson County Court Clerk in Lexington. Alert: clerks often rendered names phonetically or by preference. For instance Levi McEwen spelled Lafayette "Lafayatt" consistently.

On pages 74-75 of the above volume it was reported in the settling of JOHN PARKER's estate that $200 had been spent on tombstones. Pictured below is the ornate tombstone of the Reverend JOHN PARKER, 1784-1864, with its "fancy" footstone. Later an ornate tombstone was erected over the grave of Parker's widow, Rebecca and it is shown below also.
To the Memory of Rev. JOHN PARKER I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course. I have kept the faith, henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness. |
