During his life time, David researched the history of several Decatur and Henderson County families. His research provides important basic research on the history of families that now live or have lived in these two counties. Like all research, it is not perfect and is known to contain both errors and omissions. Thomas was a Corporel in Company K. of the 2nd Tennessee Mounted Infantry, U.S. Army. He enrolled at Johnsonville, Tennessee, June 20, 1864. His age at the time of enlistment was 23. His military records describe him as 6 feet in height, fair complexion, blue eyes, and dark hair. He died from smallpox at the military hospital at Clifton, Tennessee.

6. William H.[2] Thomas (Jess, 1). Born, circa 1839. Died, 28 Aug 1864, in Andersonville, GA. Census: 1850, in Decatur Co., TN. William H. Thomas was a private in Company A of the 7th Tennessee Cavalry, U.S. Army. He enlisted August 28, 1862, at Jackson, Tennessee for a period of three years. He was captured and sent to the Andersonville Prison in Georgia where he died. There is a marker for him in the Powers Cemetery in Henderson Co.

William Henry Lewis went to southern Illinois at the outbreak of the Civil War to avoid service in the Confederate Army. Neither did he join the Union Army. He taught school in Williamson Co., IL, and met his future wife, Harriet Ann Mitchell, whild boarding at her family's home. He returned to Tennessee shortly after the end of the war and his marriage.

"Mr. Lomax certainly proved everyone wrong because Monday [January 14, 1991] he celebrated his 102 birthday. There was a party that included a big cake decorated with bright red roses. "The party was at Alvis and Melvie Lomax's home in the Crawford Community near Decaturville, where Mr. Lomax lives. "Guests included nurses and aides from Parsons Home Health Care. They brought food, gifts, and warm birthday greetings because Mr. Lomax is their oldest patient. "'When someone lives to be 102, they deserve a party,' noted Janice Wyatt, PHHC registered nurse. "Wyatt says for Mr. Lomax's age, he is in really excellent health. Health problems include poor circulation in his legs, high blood pressure and a little arthritis. "Mr. Lomax says he can't tell that being 102 causes a lot of daily problems, except for it being a little harder to get out of a chair. "'Sometimes it takes me a try or two before I can get up and then I have to stand still for a minute before I can walk.' "What kind of advice does Mr. Lomax have for people wanting to live long enough to become a centurian [centenarian]? "'I got none 'cause I'm not old,' asserted Mr. Lomax with a broad smile and eyes twinkling with Mischief. "Mr. Alvis says he and his father are closer today than when he was a young boy. "'Pappy is more like our friend now,' explained Mr. Alvis, who is 73-years-old. Mr. Willie is 77-years-old. "Mr. Lomax has always been a storyteller. 'When he was young he did the talking and everyone else listened when he started telling about the good old days,' said Mr. Alvis. "Since he was born in 1889, Mr. Lomax has seen the world change from riding horses and mules to space travel. He loves to tell about the first car he ever saw. Mr. Lomax and a friend were riding their mules to town and while they had stopped at Brooksie Branch to let the mules get a drink of water, a car drove by. "'It scared the mules to death,' reminisced Mr. Lomax. 'Dr. Rogers had the first car.' "He remembers getting electricity in his home and the first telephone. 'You used to have to talk to the operator to get anybody,' explained Mr. Lomax. "Mr. Lomax was born in the Crawford community, not far from where he lives today.
