WILLIE D. BUCK MONUMENT - MT. GILEAD CEMETERY

by Mary Eugenia Rushing

Jordan Buck, and man of wealth, was courting Vinie Dyer. As the story was passed down in the Dyer family, Mr. Buck wanted to leave his property to an heir.

He chose to marry Vinie Dyer; however, Mr. Buck wanted to be sure that his wife could produce an heir. Actually she was expected to become pregnant before marriage. Vinie was to be given a deed to one of his several forms, before accepting Mr. Buck's offer. Since Vinie refused the suggestion, Mr. Buck went elsewhere to find a suitable bride.

One did accept the offer and a son was born. The child live to be fourteen years, so many months, so many days and, I believe, so many hours. This information can be obtained from a monument in the Mt. Gilead Cemetery in the Shady Hill Community. No other child was born to the narriage.

As a child I remember an iron fence around what appeared to me enormous monuments.

Vinie Dyer never married.
