History of Basket Ball

LEXINGTON HIGH SCHOOL closed a very successful season in basket ball, under the leadership of Coach Dumas, winning the Southwestern Tournament, held at the Y. M. C. A., Bemis, Tenn.; also winning nine of the eleven games played during the season. The team was noted for its clean sportsmanship manifested during the season.

Not a team had Lexington High outclassed during the season, but because of a few breaks the "champs" suffered two defeats. Much credit goes to Coach Dumas for the success of the team. He coaches clean athletics and keeps the team in condition for every contest.

CAPTAIN HERNDON (Forward) — One of the outstanding features of the season was the performance of Captain Herndon. Houston was noted for his long-distance shots and his ability to shoot the ball from any angle. He led his teammates in scoring, with 157 of the 286 points made during the season. He made the team on his first attempt in the year 1922, and has developed into one of the best players that has ever left Lexington High. Aside from being high-point man in the Southwestern Tournament, he only missed three games during the four seasons that he played. Houston was awarded the gold basket ball for being the best player on his team this year. Graduating this year, he leaves to make some college a three-letter man. His clean playing won a name for him that his school admired.

SCOTT (Forward) — Scott was a player that never gave up if the opponents were in the lead. He was a clean, sportsmanlike player, and was very accurate on his long shots. "Spider" has been wearing the "L" for two years, and has gained fame with his teammates and school that shall long be remembered; and he will be missed next year at the call of the court, when "Spider," like the rest of L.H.S. stars, will be trying for honors on some college team.

FRAZIER (Guard) — Frazier, star guard, who perfected playing the ball off the backboard, is Captain-elect for the coming season. James was a guard that you could always depend upon. His playing in the tournament was of high quality. He played the ball from one end of the court to the other, and his only misfortune of the season was the loss of a shoe in the second game of the tournament; but his only alibi was: You can't hold a good man down,"

MUSE (Center) — Muse, the lanky center, always played a splendid game, both on the offense and the defense. This was Scott's second letter to make in basket ball, and he will be hack next fall to help carry the Lexington High warriors through another championship year; and to do this, he must keep playing his same brand of basket ball.

HAY (Forward) — Hay played good basket ball in every game in which he participated. Pettigrew has three years to play, and by the time he reaches his Senior year he should be one of the stars of the court. His fighting spirit in the last game of the tournament was a great set-back to his opponents.

OZMENT (Guard) — Ozment was a dependable and consistent player. Those who saw "Cuban" play in the tournament need no introduction to his fighting spirit. This year was "Cuban's" first year on the court, but he looked as much at home as he did on the gridiron. He has one more year in which to gain honors in the game.

CONGER (Guard) — Conger was a scrapping warrior for the L.H.S. quinteyte. He won the recognition of being one of the best dribblers of the floor. It matters not how many men were between him and his goal, he managed to bring the ball through. "Pete" has one more year, in which he will fight for another championship team.

MILAN (Forward) — Milan played a splendid game on the defense throughout the season. "Hal" was very fast on the court, and was a very accurate shot from any angle. Although "Hal," like some others, did not play in every game, he will be back next year when the Coach calls for the Cagers fighting for a regular position.

MAXWELL (Guard) — Maxwell is very small, but has plenty of courage and determination to make the team some year. This was his second year to come out; and if predictions are worth anything, Edward should be a regular in two more years of playing.
