HISTORY OF SARDIS HIGH SCHOOL
Sardis was named from "Old Sardis Campgrounds."
There have been seven buildings used for schools in Sardis. Three of them were Churches before Sardis ever had a school.
Rev. Mat Hanna taught the first school in Sardis in 1867 in a Church Building near where the Cemetery is. The second building used for school was a Church where Scott Little's home is now. The third building was: "Old Harmony Methodist Church" near where the Methodist Church now stands.
The first building built for school stood near where Henry Bevins shop now stands. It burned early in 1890. Another building was built back in the same place and was used until 1905. It was then sold and a two story brick building was built where the present building now stands. That building was condemned in 1939 and the present building was erected in 1940.
Sardis School was chartered as a Normal College by the State in 1884. College work was taught here for a long period of years. After that it was reduced to a Junior High School, and in 1932 it became a Senior High School.
The following have been principal of Sardis as a Senior High School: Arburn Powers, Burl Smith, A. J. Steel, Nelle Duffy, Yvonne Carter, Ashley Adams. The present faculty is: Principal, Mr. G. R. Haley. Commercial and English, Mrs. Glen Chalk. Math and Home Economics, Mrs. J. T. Hanna. Science and Agriculture, Mr. Grover Westover.
